Nobody Asked Me! First Edition/Giveaway

As it turns out, writing a conversational editorial type post is so frickin frackin hard!! And not hard in a good way!! So I totally bailed on my first post, which was supposed to be last week. So let's try this again this week! And actually, I'm going to keep this short and simple - and relative to the giveaway!

Recently I was running low on swag to giveaway. I put the call out. And bloggers and authors alike responded with the most awesome stuff!! So I would like to thank Anna from Herding Cats and Burning Soup for sending me the most insane box of swag I've seen in a while! Seriously, she is beyond cool and her website is effing fantastic. So go check her out! I'd also like to thank Megan from Riverina Romantics, who has been a constant source of swag and has really donated so many things time and time again to these giveaways that I could never say thank you enough! I've also received some wicked awesome stuff from Felicity Heaton. Felicity always comes through with some majorly awesome stuff! She's sent in calendars, ink pens, bracelets, and more trading cards and book marks than you can shake a stick at! Next I got some awesome stuff from Eden Summers, whose book I just reviewed yesterday! So if you haven't checked that out, you should. There is also a giveaway on that post, so be sure to enter that HERE. And then, if that wasn't enough I got some stuff in the mail from Jennifer James - also reviewed and guest posted this week - with a giveaway! Wait! There is so much more! JJ Bonds, author of the Crossroads Academy series also came through with some more fantasticness!

This week's swag giveaway also includes stuff from Cassandra Carr, Ashlyn Chase, Gabrielle Bisset, CJ Ellison, Mandy M. Roth, Cherry Adair, Carrie Ann Ryan, Kallysten and way more! So much that I couldn't even fit it all into the picture! See?!?

So that makes me wonder - what is your favorite swag to get?  Do you like bookmarks?  Buttons? Trading cards, stickers, ink pens, lip balm, key chains or any of the other bazillion options there are?  Personally, one of my favorites is magnets.  I am slowly but surely on a mission to cover my whole fridge.

I'm also curious - how do you keep your swag?  I know some people keep it in binders, boxes, envelopes... Do you cherish it and look at it all the time?  I think I am going to go the binder route, but then that doesn't give me a solution for all of the pens, buttons, and other gadget type things I get.  So I am definitely interested in how you keep yours - give me some ideas!

So that's it.  I have a whole page in my notebook of ideas of what to write for these posts - and I'm struck silent with blogger block.  So please allow me to ease into this!  Funny, I usually can't shut up, until I need to speak and then its like the blogging gods have slapped the duct tape on my mouth.  *sigh*  That's just the way the cookie crumbles, right?

Love and Candy
Liz

(PS, the giveaway is International and will end on Wednesday. Winner will have 48 hours to respond to winning notification!)

Review/Giveaway: Concealed Desire by Eden Summers

Title: Concealed Desire
Series: No
Author: Eden Summers
Published: January 23, 2013 Etopia Press
Format: ebook provided for review
Tour: Yes! Giveaway at the bottom of post!

A love that breaks all the rules…

Since her first day at work, Beth Graison has been in love with Dean Sutherland—the “Son” in Sutherland & Son. Although he’s an unrepentant player, there’s an unmistakable connection between them, and she knows he feels it too. But she’s not about to risk her career for any man, especially one with an office right down the hall whom she works with every day.

Dean Sutherland doesn’t do love, but he does do women. And he hasn’t felt more than sexual attraction for any woman until Beth. Entirely feminine, smart, and with a natural beauty beyond compare, she makes him think about all kinds of uncomfortable things—like a future and happiness—things he knows from experience are pure fiction.

When his father, the “Sutherland” in Sutherland & Son, propositions Beth to be more than just an employee, Dean can’t keep her at arm’s length any longer. But he doesn’t expect the scorching kiss they share, or the idea that forms when he holds her in his arms. Can he stop his father’s manipulating game by making the first move on Beth? Or will his reputation as a womanizer make him just one more Sutherland she wants to ignore?

I recently read this book, Concealed Desire and I was completely blown away. I wasn’t sure what to expect, to be honest. What I got was a book full of anticipation, flirtation, imagination, miscommunication, and well, the torture of love – which I love! Eden’s writing is very good, in my opinion. It is not overly flowery or graphic, but very smooth flowing. Her ability to bring me into the story was fantastic, it was just a matter of a few words before I was sucked into Beth and Dean and their story.

Beth receives an indecent proposal of sorts from her boss which basically sends her running from the office. Her boss is 25 years her senior and the man is truly a monster of a man, a very real villain. And an asshole. Beth, however, is definitely a woman to pay attention to. She isn’t a damsel in distress, I envision her as young and independent. So when she takes off and finds herself in the bar throwing back shots, I can’t really say I blame her.

Enter Dean. Dean sees her take off and heads off after her and finds her well on her way to crocked. Right away I liked him. Tall, dark, and handsome with chocolate brown eyes! Oh, my dream man, for sure! Visually, he is perfection. His personality and reputation find him to be a bit of a player, so he definitely has that cocky persona where you don’t know if you want to kiss him or smack him, and I just love that in my male characters! However, when it comes to Beth, his depths are untapped. But it seems even true intentions have trouble overcoming bad timing for deal ol’ Dean.

This book also has something else I adore – switching point of views. Getting both sides to a story really just fleshes everything out for me. Eden does a fantastic job showing us how both of these two hardheads feels, and I loved every minute of it.

Let’s talk heat. Yay! This book had a few really good scenes. One sure way to make me swoon is a good shower scene – and this book packs a heck of a punch with it’s own. Hot, steamy, erotic and incredibly sexy – it hits every mark. And the rest of the scenes? They were definitely hot and sexy!

So yep, I’m definitely telling you all to read this book! Eden writes perfect drama, and she tortures the hell out of these two. And I know if you are like me, you love that! I don’t want some perfect and happy romance. I want my two main characters to have such passion that it burns them up – and these two have got it.

Character Bios for Inked By An Angel by Shauna Allen

Inked By An Angel
Shauna Allen

Jed Gentry is doing just fine, thank you very much, running his tattoo studio in Austin, Texas. So what if people think he’s a bit on the surly side? He’s been burned by his ex who sticks around to torture him and he lives with a family heartache that he’d rather not talk about. But he’s got a thriving business, his dream car, and good friends. Not much to complicate things.

At least, not until she walked in…

Kyle O’Neill has had it with being the sheltered daddy’s girl at the family accounting firm and is ready to spread her wings and fly on her own for the first time. Unfortunately, it seems she’s about to fall flat on her face when her first and only client is – gulp -- a tattoo artist! Her country club upbringing certainly hasn’t prepared her for this place or the sizzling attraction her traitorous body feels for the grumpy owner.
But there is a Divine conspiracy at work here pushing these two together. And they are hell bent on bucking the Heavenly plan all the way. Luckily, their angel is a true believer and pulls every trick he knows from under his halo to make this a match made in Heaven.

Who says God doesn’t have a sense of humor?

Review: Long Time Coming by Jennifer James

Title: Long Time Coming
Series: No
Author: Jennifer James
Published: August 2012, Etopia Press
Tour: No
Format: ebook provided for review

One scorching weekend of no-strings sex? Or the first two days of something special…Going home for his older sister’s wedding has been a real pain. Unable to get a room at a local hotel, he's stuck in his parents’ spare bedroom, in a twin bed too short for his six-four frame, with nothing to do but fantasize about his sister’s maid of honor and her little purple bikini. Joey Sanchez: the woman he’s had a crush on for the last ten years. All grown up in all the right places.

And it just so happens she’s had a crush on him too.

Lucky for him, Joey knows what she wants. In the pool, in the movie theater, with some very hot text messages, she quenches his desire and demands no promises. She’s married to her career, and that’s the way she likes it. But with the weekend winding down, Rob realizes she’s only left him wanting more. And he doesn’t want to spend the next ten years without her…

Rob is home for the big event, his sister’s wedding. And her BFF Joey is there too. Rob has always had a crush on Joey, and now Joey is ready to take matters into her own hands. Jennifer James has written every teenage boy turn hot and sexy man’s dream come true with this story. Rob and Joey are the source of several epically hot and sexy scenes that had me curling my toes and thinking “dammmmmmnnnnnn!”

This was a quick read because I really didn’t want to put it down. For one thing, it’s written from Rob’s point of view, which is something I don’t see too often. And you know what? I liked it. Sometimes it’s nice to see what a man thinks (but not all the time fellas, we’ll let you know when we want your opinion, mmm’kay?) But in this case Rob is very likeable, and as the story goes on and it becomes clear his feelings are more than sexual, the more I like him. And I am so excited for him that his fantasies have finally come true with Joey.

And heck, Joey? That woman simply exudes awesomeness. She is calm, cool, and collected. She’s hot and sexy, and quite inventive while being spontaneous and playful. But I have to tell ya, if I could take her out of the story and put me in her place, you’d have to consider it done!

So all in all I give this story lots of thumbs up! It was super hot with lots of teasing and sneaking around to add a bit of fun. The characters are so likeable and real. I really hope Rob gets everything he wants, but if he doesn’t – I’ll give him my number!

Excerpt/Giveaway: Don't Fear The Reaper by Michelle Muto

Don't Fear The Reaper
The Netherworld Series, Book 1
Michelle Muto

Grief-stricken by the murder of her twin, Keely Morrison is convinced suicide is her ticket to eternal peace and a chance to reunite with her sister. When Keely succeeds in taking her own life, she discovers death isn’t at all what she expected. Instead, she’s trapped in a netherworld on Earth and her only hope for reconnecting with her sister and navigating the afterlife is a bounty-hunting reaper and a sardonic, possibly unscrupulous, demon. But when the demon offers Keely her greatest temptation—revenge on her sister’s murderer—she must uncover his motives and determine who she can trust. Because, as Keely soon learns, both reaper and demon are keeping secrets and she fears the worst is true—that her every decision will change how, and with whom, she spends eternity.

Here I was—seventeen, dead, and thoroughly nostalgic.

I got an email from the author, Michelle, about this post a few weeks ago.  She was extremely nice and helpful, giving me an armload full of information I could use for this post which is scheduled to be a promo post.  As I look through everything, I'm really thinking I wish I had signed up to do a review instead!  This book looks incredibly good, I'm tellin' ya.  I can't post every teaser and excerpt I've received, but I can tell you - they all sound good.  Very good, in fact.  In the end I chose this one because it actually brought a tear to my eye, just from an excerpt.  I have a feeling this book deals with a lot of hard subjects; love, death...suicide.  For those of us who have dealt with suicide in their lives, it might be a hard read - or it could be so beneficial.  As one of those people who have dealt with it in their lives multiple times, as a person who faces their fears, I am going to buy this book as soon as I'm done with this post.  And I'm going to cut my ramble short here, before I say more than the post does!
Love and Candy, *Liz

CHAPTER 24 TEASER

When class ended, I followed Gina and Miles into the hallway.

Miles put an arm around Gina. “It’ll be okay,” he told her.

Why did people keep saying that?
Granted, Miles was the resolute type. It’s why we’d dated—we were a lot alike. Yet, I’d hoped for something...else. I ached to be in his arms again. Our relationship had ended six months ago on friendly terms. Friendly enough that we’d hooked up a couple of times since then, including the few times we’d doubled with Jordan and Pete.

Miles and I had still called each other almost every week. When we’d dated, neither of us had ever said we loved one another. That came after the breakup. Somehow, we’d worked out a better relationship when we hadn’t expected each other to always be there on a weekend night or between classes. Sometimes, as I’d lain in bed at night, I’d wondered if we’d ever wind up with each other again. Miles had thought we would. He’d even asked me to senior prom if neither of us was dating anyone else when next May rolled around.

I stuck with Miles when he and Gina went different directions at the end of the hall. Gina had World History, Miles had English. He acknowledged a couple guys he hung with in the hall as he made his way to his locker. My locker was across the hall from his. Pictures, notes, and photos had been taped to it, just as Daniel had said. Miles glanced at it, then turned away. He punched his locker, denting it slightly. He twirled the combination lock, popped the locker open and shoved his books inside, took out two more, and slammed the locker shut. He walked across the hall and stood in front of my locker.

If anyone in life had a chance of sensing my presence, it was Miles. I stood behind him and placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Damn it, Keely!” He ruffled his already perfectly mussed light brown hair—a habit of his whenever he was frustrated.

Gently, I leaned into him, resting my head against his back.

“Why?” Miles whispered.

For a moment I almost imagined he knew I was there. “I’m here,” I replied. “I’m sorry. I guess I just… I guess I got lost.”

“Why? Why, dammit!” he repeated. He touched my photo taped among the letters, lightly stroking it.

I caught a glimpse of Banning and Daniel talking at the far end of the hall. Banning was partially turned away from me, but Daniel didn’t pretend to give me such privacy. I pulled myself away, and positioned myself between Miles and my locker. I had hoped for too much. Miles couldn’t see me. No one could.

“I miss you,” I said, reaching up to kiss his cheek. Miles continued to stare through me at my locker, his lips pinched tight in frustration and confusion.

“No matter what you think of me now, this was never about you. Not ever,” I told him. “But it should have been. I should have stayed.”

Miles turned and walked down the hallway, the gentle tap of his boots against the floor echoing back to me.

“Miles!” I called out. I felt Banning and Daniel staring at my back, but I didn’t care.

Miles stopped and turned back toward me and I held my breath, hoping against hope. Banning said the living rarely saw the dead—that they usually shrugged off any sign we were right there. I bet Miles had that feeling now—something had told him to turn and look for me. For a moment, I swore my heart held perfectly still.

“I’m right here,” I whispered. “Right here.”

We stood there, staring. Except that Miles looked past me, to my locker instead. He crossed his wrists in front of his chest and signed—something a bunch of us did. Signing enabled us to talk in class or across a crowded, noisy room.

I love you.

A tear spilled down my cheek. I signed back.

I love you, too.

Until right then I didn’t realize how much I’d miss him, miss his touch, his sexy smile, the way I felt around him. The way his hair was always perfect, even when he ran his hands through it. Miles turned and walked off in that low-key kind of shuffle of his. Was he mad at me for what I’d done, or mad that I was gone? Before today, I’d have said he was just mad at the situation.

Before he turned the corner I signed to him again.

Take care.

Helplessly, I watched him walk out of my life.

As I stood there in the breeze, in the absence of my other self, I understood there were lessons I still needed to learn. I knew this with such force, such clarity. I had a lot to learn about the afterlife, and I had to accept that my past and present would never again be the same. But, the hardest lesson of all? That there would always be people in my world who I loved beyond everything else, people I couldn’t live without, but had to let go of.
For now.
